Who are the Karateka in France?
Karate, a history of men
What is karate in the national sports landscape? By whom is made it up? How the Karateka live their practice? Answers in figures and testimonies of anonymous from practitioners of the France.

The first stone was laid in 1975. Soon 40 years and 4,000 clubs later, the French Federation of Karate and Disciplines associated weighs 225 000 licensees. Sport karate brought the France forty senior titles, including six titles of ISU World team trophy, which puts it in second world nation behind the Japan. It has its champions, its legends, its major figures. It has just awarded its 9th sixth dan and is preparing to organize a championship of the world in the prestigious Palais Omnisports de Bercy. Strong of its gradual maturation, it has been able to build an organization, around karate and associated disciplines, which is now a formidable machine staging, federate, train. confirm beginner practitioners and experts of all stripes. She has developed a competence, probably unique in France, made of experience and respect for differences, to bring together its all walks of life, all technical and cultural diversities in the heart of a common project, a core structural, practical and philosophical, which gives it its homogeneity. The unit is in the centre of diversity. But to the beyond perhaps this place in history, and the leading role in the Organization of practices delegated to it by the french State, the karate 'and disciplines associated with' is above all a story of men. Men at large since it also brings youth, women, people experience that continue to nourish their life, yet expanded thousand wealth, with their art of combat, a love life, central, a pillar of their existence. Men in the broad sense because it brings together cultures, visions of the world, the various routes and histories, since it mixes circles, societies and ethnic origins. Men at large finally because, regardless of the technique, it is human achievement, beyond all the differences, referred to. The men and women who make up this great family, their course and their own particular histories, we make them you discover in the following pages. Where do they come from? Who are? What dream? Differences and proximity, various practices and common ideals, regardless of age, level, the prospect of future...

The evolution of the licensees for 35 years
223 344...
The number of licensees at February 1, 2012. An evolution that places the FFKDA in 13th position of the national federations in terms of licensees and made her the 2nd non-Olympic federation behind the FF of Petanque.

Taekwondo → 49000
Boxing → 42000
Muaythai → 5600

30.5% of women
Is karate male? The answer is Yes to almost 70% again in 2012. But the analysis of the position of women on the tatamis - without even talk about a team of female France which is a locomotive and beautiful showcase for the discipline in recent years - confirms: less than 9% in the creation of the Ffkarate in 1976 (the year of his emancipation from the FFJudo), women have slowly but surely invested dojos in the last thirty years. Since 1978, they thus passed the threshold of 10% (12.65%), and then to 15% in 1982 (from 13 to 16.3% in one year). The cap of the representation of the fifth of the licensees took more time. Thus, it took until the end of 1995-96 season to see women pass the 20% mark, then that of the 25% to exceed 30% in 2011.
